The Maine Event

The Maine Event

Maine was a weird state to cross into. Because we came in from the west side through New Hampshire, we weren’t in a very population dense area. Combine that with it being a weekday and us skirting into the national forest, we didn’t see a single person for the first three days! Driving around felt like we had accidentally discovered a different dimension. I’m sure it’s even more surreal headed up to someplace like Alaska.

We spend a few nights in the Biglow Preserve catching up on some work and enjoying the trees.

On our way to the coast, we had some of the best Irish Red beer that I can remember at a place called Geaghan’s pub in Bangor right in the middle of Maine. We booked it through this area pretty quick because Kate needed cell phone service for some client work and we weren’t having much luck.

Next National Park to check out was Acadia. We’re sitting right at the end of the tourist season here so the majority of the seafood shops were closed down for the winter. Had some good Lobster flatbread pizza and Kate had the Mac’n’cheese in Bar Harbor.

Then we did some really cool stairway hikes. This park let dogs on many of the trails, which isn’t common for national parks. Here’s a bit of the Cadillac Mountain hike:

And a view facing the other direction. There was a cruise ship in port that you can see in the background. They’re, uh, quite huge and extravagant.

Our campsite was a half mile away from the Atlantic. We managed to catch it just in time! Had to run a bit as the colors were coming on the horizon.

Venturing all the way to the south of the island is the famously picturesque Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. I couldn’t get enough of the rugged coast of Maine. It’s just too cool.

After a few days in the touristy area, we ventured to a much harder to get to point called the Marshal Point Lighthouse, famous for being the turnaround spot in Forest Gump’s cross country run. It had an extensive museum with lots of fishing history about the local town.

Our last night in Maine was spent in Portland, were we watched the red harvest moon rise over the resting sailboats. We also visited the LL Bean headquarters, which is fairly underwhelming in the day of Amazon. We also ate pizza at a local chain called Otto’s, which might be the best pizza we’ve ever had (including the stuff we ate in Italy).
