New Mexico’s Bisti Badlands

The Bisti Wilderness is another red dot on our National Geographic Road Atlas that seems to be well kept secret on the statewide nature scene.  It’s a fragile looking geological valley full of petrified wood and bizarre sand formations tucked into the northwest corner of New Mexico.  Not only was it our last little hurrah, but by an astronomically small chance we met an old high school friend at the edge of the wilderness and after laughing about our luck we hiked around for a few hours.  Little did I know that the friend, Ender, and his wife had texted another friend from Colorado who was waiting at our camp when we got back!  It was a great time for all and we had beers under the torrent of rain and clay ridden mud that we were exposed to that evening.
